2024 olympics: The yards positioning themselves for the offshore boat

There was another step forward in Februray in World Sailing’s selection process for the equipment to be used in the new mixed double offshore event in the Paris Olympics in 2024. The international federation published a list of the twelve boats presented by builders, who will be able to compete for the bid to tender when it is launced. For the yards, it is time to move their pawns forward as they look ahead. Tip & Shaft looks at what is going on.

Billy Besson

Billy Besson: “I’ll be going into attack mode”

15th in the Nacra 17 World Championship in December in Auckland, Billy Besson and Marie Riou learnt in early January that they will not be taking part in the Tokyo Olympics, as the French Federation preferred Quentin Delapierre and Manon Audinet. “A huge disappointment” for the Tahitian who has now put this behind him and is focusing on the second SailGP season, with higher ambitions and changes to the French team. He tells Tip & Shaft about all this.

How french sailing sets its course for the olympic mixed offshore in 2024

The organisers of the Transat AG2R La Mondiale 2020 announced last week that they will accept free registrations and run a separate classification for mixed gender duos. Their decision is yet another illustration of he growing number of initiatives which are coming together to create an early pathway for French duos who are looking to race in the Mixed Offshore division at the 2024 Paris Olympics. As the nation which really pushed for the discipline to be brought in to the Olympics it is understandable that French sailing is already making sure it can capitalise to best effect. Tip & Shaft takes a quick look around at how the organisations, classes, race organizers and the FFVoile are making early progress.

From Friday to Sunday Chelsea Football Club in London hosts the World Sailing Mid-Year Meeting. One the main issues is the choice of Olympic equipment for the Paris 2024 Games, choices which naturally enough sees feelings and ideas erupting through the sport and within the International Federation.
